The commentary says: This is the simile of speaking for others in accordance [with convention]. Furthermore, merely following what is seen and heard in worldly convention, one uses provisional nominal designations to express and declare these matters. Expressing and declaring is that which expresses; the matter is that which is expressed. There are two kinds of worldly convention: first, the worldly convention of clinging attachments; second, the worldly convention provisionally set up by all noble wise ones. This simile illustrates the noble wise ones speaking in accordance with conventional expression, which has two aspects: first, following conventional words to explain the conventional; second, following conventional words to explain the ultimate. For now, regarding [the line] 'merely following worldly convention, they express and declare these matters according as they are seen and heard; when contemplating the real truth, it is not like that': 'Truth' means reality; contemplating the real principle, there is nothing like what is spoken. Furthermore, one merely follows convention to provisionally set up words with upāya in order to reveal the supreme, real meaning. When non-discriminative wisdom realizes and enters the real truth, it is not like that, because minds and words are cut off. This is discerning conventional existence, which is non-existent within the ultimate truth.
