Commentary: Next is explained the benefit of non-retrogression attained by those in the ten abodes. There are two parts: first, attaining the benefit of the cause, in which they do not regress and advance in cultivation; second, attaining the benefit of the fruit, in which, with causes fulfilled, they receive prediction. The preceding text has four parts: first, previously wishing to regress in mind; second, steadying the mind through hearing [the teaching]; third, further gaining superior advancement; fourth, dedicating toward bodhi. This is the first. It has five points: first, the place of benefit; second, the number benefited; third, the persons benefited; fourth, the practice cultivated; fifth, previously wishing to regress. Wishing to regress is of two kinds: first, regression after attainment; second, regression before attainment. The former is before the bhūmis; the latter is in the first seven bhūmis. Attainment has two kinds: first, attaining resolute faith (adhimukti); second, attaining realization of dharmas. Attaining resolute faith has two kinds: first, faith; second, practice. The regression of faith occurs around the fifth mind among the ten faiths; the regression of practice occurs before the sixth abode. Non-retrogression of faith means not regressing to give rise to wrong views; non-retrogression of practice means not regressing toward the two vehicles. However, when the Renwang bore says, "Cultivating the bodhisattva path for ten thousand kalpas, drifting east or west with the wind, now advancing and now regressing," this is spoken in terms of the general marks of both faith and practice, and kalpas differ as to great and small. In the Upāsakaśīlasūtra, practice spans sixty kalpas. Śāriputra's retrogression from the Great [Vehicle] is stated on the basis of great kalpas.
