贊曰：大段第二四王奉教願護。中有二：初身護、後法護。上明身護，此下明法護。前明身護護弘法人及護國土，此但護於弘法之者。又身護除諸衰禍災疫一切不安；此除貧苦令得財，故佛讚云：「汝能破裂一切眾生貧窮苦網令得福樂。」得福樂已即能弘經，故次云：「亦令此經廣行於世。」於中有三：初世尊重勸、次四王法護、後「時多聞天王說此呪」下世尊讚歎。此初，有二：初勸護人王、後勸護四眾。此護人王，文中有四：初勅四王眾、二所護之者、三正令擁護、四「能令汝等」下明令護所以。

The Commentary says: The second major section concerns the Four Heavenly Kings accepting the instruction and vowing to protect [them]. Within this there are two parts: first, physical protection; second, protection of the Dharma. The above explained physical protection; from here down explains protection of the Dharma. Previously, physical protection was explained as protecting those who propagate the Dharma and protecting the state; this [section] only protects those who propagate the Dharma. Furthermore, physical protection removes all decline, misfortune, disasters, and pestilence—all forms of disquiet; this removes poverty and suffering and brings about wealth. Therefore, the Buddha praises him, saying: 'You are able to tear apart the net of poverty and suffering of all sentient beings, causing them to attain blessings and joy.' Once they have attained blessings and joy, they can propagate the sūtra; thus it says next: 'Also cause this sūtra to circulate widely throughout the world.' Within this there are three parts: first, the World-Honoured One reiterates his exhortation; second, the Dharma protection of the Four Heavenly Kings; third, from 'At that time the Heavenly King Much-Hearing spoke this dhāraṇī' down, the World-Honoured One's praise. This first [part] has two subdivisions: first, exhorting them to protect the king of humans; second, exhorting them to protect the fourfold assembly. As for this protection of the king of humans, the text has four items: first, commanding the hosts of the Four Heavenly Kings; second, those who are protected; third, directly enjoining protection; fourth, from 'Can cause you as well' down, clarifying the reason for commanding protection.
