Chapter on the Undefiled Dhāraṇī: this is analyzed through three gateways: first, the purpose of its occurrence; second, explaining the title; third, resolving difficulties. Regarding the purpose of its occurrence: within the sixteen chapters following the "Chapter on the Four Heavenly Kings' Observation of Humans and Devas," there are five divisions that initially clarify learning and practice in dissemination: first, the "Chapter on Observation" encourages practice; second, the three chapters following the "Chapter on the Four Heavenly Kings' Protection of the State" clarify protection; third, the five chapters following the "[Chapter on] Mahāsarasvatī" clarify increasing the merit and wisdom of practitioners who propagate the sūtra; fourth, the three chapters following the "[Chapter on] the Correct Discourse on Royal Law" clarify properly maintaining their study; fifth, the four chapters such as the "[Chapter on] Prediction" accomplish the aforementioned intention of encouraging practice, protection, and so forth. Within the three chapters clarifying protection, starting with the "Four Kings' Protection of the State," there are three parts: first, causing them to protect and make offerings; second, causing them to leave behind defilement and not fall back; third, causing them to be separated from obstacles and [act] according to their wishes. Above, protection and making offerings have already been clarified; here, causing them to leave behind defilement and not fall back is clarified. If one has defiled attachment, then there is regression, because of clinging. As the Treatise on the Prajñā[pāramitā-sūtra] by the Bodhisattva Asaṅga states in explaining the separation from the obstacle of being unable to endure suffering: "Not abiding in any dharma, generating anuttarabodhi, etc., to counteract the inability to endure the suffering of saṃsāra, the suffering of conflict among sentient beings, the suffering of scarcity of resources, and so forth." Here it is also like this; hence the text below states: "If bodhisattvas are able to dwell securely, they will no longer regress from unexcelled awakening, will accomplish their correct vows, will attain unattached eloquence in their nature, and will acquire rare phenomena and abide securely in the noble path." Therefore, this incantation was spoken to protect them, causing them to leave behind defilement and not regress in their practice, which gives rise to this chapter.
