Chapter on the Firm Earth Spirit: Distinguished into three gates. 1. The rationale for its occurrence: although previously clothing was provided, food and drink had not yet been obtained to sustain them. This chapter provides food and drink, sustaining physical comfort so that they can propagate the Dharma; therefore, after the previous chapter, this chapter arises. Explaining the chapter title: in Sanskrit, 'firm' (dṛḍhā) has the meaning of earth, meaning the spirit of the firm earth. Or again, because the spirit is able to make the earth firm, it is named the spirit of the firm earth; this is also a tatpuruṣa compound (依主釋), as making the earth firm is the function of the spirit. 3. Resolving doubts: the goddess provided wealth and goods, and the title states 'Chapter on Increasing Wealth and Goods'; this earth spirit increases food and drink, so why does it not say 'Chapter on the Earth Spirit Increasing the Flavors of Food and Drink'? Answer: the goddess was divided into two chapters, so 'increasing wealth and goods' distinguishes it. Since the 'Earth Spirit Chapter' is not divided, there is no confusion, hence food and drink are not mentioned.
