贊曰：就此品文，大分為四：一述昔捨身、二「復告阿難陀」下會於今古、三「我為汝等說」下勸勵修學、四「爾時世尊」下眾聞得益。初中分三：初結前引後為起說之端、次「爾時世尊」下次為現制底作陳捨身之序、後「復告阿難陀」下談昔捨身正利時會。此初復三：此初，經家結前。

Commentary: Regarding the text of this chapter, it is broadly divided into four: 1. Narrating the past relinquishment of the body. 2. From "He again told Ānanda" onward, connecting the present with the past. 3. From "I have spoken for you" onward, exhorting practice and study. 4. From "At that time, the World-Honoured One" onward, the assembly hearing and receiving benefit. The first [part] is divided into three: first, concluding the preceding and introducing the subsequent as the beginning of the discourse; next, from "At that time, the World-Honoured One" onward, manifesting a caitya as a preface to narrating the relinquishment of the body; after that, from "He again told Ānanda" onward, discussing the past relinquishment of the body properly to benefit the assembly of that time. This first [part] again has three: this first is the sūtra compiler concluding the preceding.
