Commentary: Next is listing their names. There are two parts: first listing those beyond training, and next distinguishing those in training. Among the list of those beyond training there are eleven persons. The various sūtras differ in the order of listing their names; here, it mostly follows the order of their going forth. As the *Bao'en jing* says, these are the first five bhikṣus. The causes and conditions of their being delivered first, as well as the explanation of Kauṇḍinya's name, are as found in the root *Fahua shu*. 'Venerable' (āyuṣmat) means possessing the two life-spans of merit and wisdom. Older translations mostly rendered it 'wisdom-life,' but here, to show the dual fulfillment, it is called 'venerable' (possessing life). Aśvajit: *aśva* means horse, *jit* means victorious; it is also called Aśvabaśita, which is the Bhikṣu Horsurpasser (Māśva) mentioned in older translations. Vāṣpa means 'breath.' Mahānāman means 'Great Name'; he was the second son of King Dronodana (Amṛtodana). That king had two sons: one was called Aniruddha, and the second was named Mahānāman. Bhadrika means 'Good and Worthy'; he was the second son of King Śuklodana. That king had two sons: one was named Nandika, and the second was named Bhadrika.
