Commentary: Transforming the land and purifying the directions has four parts: 1. identifying the persons capable of transforming it; 2. clarifying the extent of the transformed land; 3. the characteristics of the transformed land; 4. clarifying the perfume's fumigation. Question: Which Buddha transformed this? Answer: One explanation is that Śākyamuni transformed it, just as in the Lotus Sūtra, when the transformation Buddhas were about to assemble, Śākyamuni transformed it. Another explanation is that the four Buddhas transformed it, just as when Gadgadasvara was about to arrive in this land, flower thrones and so forth were manifested in advance. The second explanation is correct. Why? Because below, emitting light and showing auspicious signs to produce delight are all done by the four Tathāgatas; therefore we know the pure land was also transformed by the four Buddhas. 'Indranīla lapis lazuli' is the blue lapis lazuli jewel of Śakra, lord of the devas; being supreme among jewels, it is specifically mentioned. Outflow-bearing sentiments are narrow, whereas the outflow-free mind is all-penetrating; hence it is vast and pure. Due to non-conceptual wisdom, there is indranīla. Although Ruciraketu's house was pure as a Buddha land, it possessed the five divisions of fragrance; the explanation of the text is easy to know.
