Commentary: Eighth, the gate of permanence and impermanence. The text is divided into two: first a general statement, and next a distinctive explanation. This is the general statement. 'For a reason they are spoken of as permanent' applies commonly to all three bodies. Stating that they are impermanent does not apply comprehensively to the dharmakāya. Below it says: 'Because it is not a conditioned phenomenon and because it is the root, it is only spoken of as permanent.' Alternatively, tathatā and wisdom combined are named the dharmakāya; since the four wisdoms are impermanent, the general statement says 'or spoken of as impermanent.' Below, according to tathatā alone, it says it is permanent and is not a conditioned phenomenon. Or, based on its not being a conditioned phenomenon caused by afflictions, it is said to not be a conditioned phenomenon.
