Within vigor, first, as for “not delighting in dwelling together with afflictions,” vigor has three types: first, armor-like vigor (saṃnāhavīrya); second, vigor gathering wholesome qualities (kuśaladharmasaṃgrāhaka); third, vigor benefiting and gladdening sentient beings (sattvārthakriyā). This is the first, armor-like vigor. At the initial generation of the mind, one gives rise to fierce aspiration, desiring to overthrow all afflictions, like putting on armor. Second, as for “not accepting comfort and ease when merit is not yet complete,” within gathering wholesome qualities there are four kinds: energetic, unyielding, non-regressing, and insatiable. This is non-regressing vigor, because in what has not yet been attained one can advance and seek without stopping to enjoy ease. Third, “not giving rise to weariness in difficult practices” is insatiable vigor. Fourth, being accompanied by love and compassion, through upāya of gathering in and benefiting sentient beings to accomplish all, is vigor benefiting and gladdening sentient beings. Fifth, “vowing and seeking the irreversible stage” is unyielding vigor within gathering wholesome qualities, because one does not slight oneself and is able to seek the superior stage.
