5.45

Commentary: Encouraging protection. There are three parts: first, encouraging the protection of human kings; from "you four kings" onward, encouraging the protection of the saddharma; from "therefore you" onward, encouraging the protection of the people of the fourfold assembly who uphold the sūtra. Within encouraging the protection of the Dharma: first is protecting the Dharma; from "you four kings and the rest of the heavenly host" onward, it explains the benefits of protecting the Dharma. Within the benefits of protecting the Dharma: first, subduing oneself to conquer enemies; from "if you can" onward, eliminating three disasters for others: first, hostile bandits; second, famine; third, pestilence.
