The sūtra states: 'When he wishes to listen, he should first adorn the most supreme palace room, a spacious and open place cherished by the king, sprinkling the ground with scented water and scattering various famous flowers; erect a lion's seat, a superior Dharma throne, decorating it with various precious jewels; spread various jeweled canopies, banners, and streamers; burn priceless incense; and play various kinds of music. The king at that time should bathe purely, anoint his body with fragrant ointment, put on fresh, clean clothes and various necklaces, and sit upon a small, humble seat without giving rise to arrogance; relinquishing his position of sovereignty and leaving behind all pride, he should, with an upright mind and correct mindfulness, listen to this king of sūtras. Toward the Dharma master he should generate the thought of him as the Great Master; furthermore, toward the queens, princes, court ladies, and retinue within the palace, he should generate a mind of loving-kindness, looking upon one another with joy and speaking gentle words with a pleasant countenance. His own body and mind should be filled with great joy.'
