Sūtra: At that time the bodhi tree deity said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One! These ten thousand devaputras have come to the Buddha's abode from the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven in order to listen to the Dharma; how is it that the Tathāgata straightaway confers upon them the prediction that they will attain buddhahood? World-Honoured One! I have never heard that these devaputras fully cultivated the six pāramitās and performed difficult and painful austerities, relinquishing hands, feet, head, eyes, marrow, and brain; retinues, wives, and children; elephants, horses, carriages, and mounts; male and female slaves and servants; palaces and parks; gold, silver, lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl, carnelian, coral, amber, round jade, and shells; food, drink, clothing, bedding, and medicine, as other immeasurable hundreds of thousands of bodhisattvas made offerings with various requisites to past incalculable hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of nayutas of buddhas. Such bodhisattvas each pass through immeasurable and boundless numbers of kalpas, and only then receive the prediction of bodhi. World-Honoured One! By what cause and condition, cultivating what superior practice, and planting what good roots, have these devaputras, coming from that heaven and hearing the Dharma for a short while, forthwith attained the prediction? I only pray that the World-Honoured One will explain it for me and cut through the net of doubt."
