This is freedom from the two obstacles of delusion and knowledge. Afflictions are the obstacle of delusion; 'eryan' (jñeya) is a Sanskrit word meaning the obstacle of knowledge. Wisdom originally shatters delusion; delusion is the two attachments to person and dharmas. 'Selflessness' means the absence of these two attachments. If one produces attachment toward wisdom, wisdom also becomes an obstacle. The Tathāgata fully realizes that both persons and dharmas, delusion and wisdom, are fundamentally empty; hence it is said, 'constantly pure and markless.' Because sentient beings suffer in confusion, he gives rise to a mind of compassion to rescue and deliver them.
