計常則有相，非常則無相。因生有住，因住有異。住謂住於世間；異謂從少至老，其相變異。住異二句前無問辭，蓋問雖略，答必詳悉也。

Grasping at permanence entails characteristics; impermanence entails characteristiclessness. Because of arising there is abiding; because of abiding there is alteration. "Abiding" means abiding in the world; "alteration" means changing characteristics from youth to old age. The two propositions on abiding and alteration had no preceding query; this is because although the questions were brief, the answer is necessarily detailed and complete.
