"Śramaṇa" is translated here as "diligent cessation", meaning diligently cultivating the myriad goods and putting an end to all evils. "Brāhmaṇa" is translated here as "pure conduct". This passage states that these two groups produce views of existence and nonexistence, their errors being identical to those of the tīrthikas. "Causelessness" means conceptualizing a spontaneous nature. "Cause-possessing" means conceptualizing this body as arising from subtle atoms or arising from Pradhāna. Taking these as causes, they wish to make results appear, hence it says "causes and effects appear". Furthermore, they conceptualize things and times as abiding, or as arising and abiding dependent upon the five aggregates, eighteen elements, twelve sense bases, and so forth, which is the view of permanence; or they say that after having arisen they immediately perish, which is the view of annihilation.
