設此二喻以明外道斷見。初喻無果，無果則無因也。次喻無因，無因則無果也。

These two similes are set forth to explain the tīrthikas' view of annihilation. The first simile illustrates the absence of an effect; if there is no effect, there is no cause. The second simile illustrates the absence of a cause; if there is no cause, there is no effect.
