此二喻，政謂八識心與六識和合俱生，非異非不異。而云七識者，以意根、意識兼五識身而言，非謂第七識。日月海水喻本，光明波浪喻末也。

These two analogies specifically say that the eighth-consciousness mind and the six consciousnesses arise in union together, being neither different nor non-different. As for speaking of 'seven consciousnesses', this refers to the mental faculty and the mental consciousness together with the five consciousness groups, and does not mean the seventh consciousness. The sun, moon, and ocean water illustrate the root; the light and waves illustrate the branches.
