The *Commentary* says: 'Mind, mentation, and consciousness are different names for one single dharma: directed toward mental factors it is called mind; being able to generate it is mentation; discriminating it is consciousness.' It also says: 'That which arises first is mind, that which arises next is mentation, and that which subsequently discerns is consciousness.' That 'mind is named for accumulating karma' means that when faculties and dusts confront each other, a single thought of the mind arises and generates grasping, accomplishing good or evil karma. That 'mentation is named for broadly accumulating' means that from the previous mind it turns into the mental faculty, generating greed, anger, and delusion, broadly producing various karmas. 'The various consciousnesses cognize what is cognized' means that the sixth consciousness discriminates the five dusts received by the preceding five consciousnesses; hence it says 'manifesting and equal realms are spoken of as five', where 'five' refers to the five consciousnesses.
