"Like the sun and moon," etc., brings out various dhyāna characteristics to demonstrate gain and loss. That is, within meditation, one may see forms like the sun and moon; or see a padma (here rendered 'red lotus'); or see the ocean with the appearance of deep chasms; or like empty space; or like exhausted fire (exhausted [*jin*] is sometimes written as embers [*jin*]). When cultivating contemplation, seeing these various characteristics appear, one must not grasp at them; if one grasps, one falls into tīrthika false dhyāna and drops into the realm of the two vehicles. One should skillfully contemplate and leave all of them behind; not seeing a single dharma that can be attained, one is without anything at all and can enter the Tathāgata dhyāna.
