Previously he directly discriminated the svabhāva of vikalpa without yet clarifying that which is grasped; therefore he next clarifies paratantra and further illustrates it with an illusion to show that vikalpa is fundamentally empty. Ordinary people do not comprehend this and see various distinct marks; hence the simile says, "the illusion and the various things are neither different nor non-different", examining and revealing it back and forth, which can be seen by analogy with what preceded. If one understands that dharmas lack svabhāva, both paratantra and vikalpa are ungraspable; therefore one should not grasp at difference and non-difference, or existence and nonexistence.
