"Illusions, dreams, tree reflections in water,
Floating hairs, and the mirage in the heat of noon:
Contemplating the three realms of existence in this way,
One ultimately attains liberation.
Just like the thirsting deer's conception,
With its fluctuating, deluded mind,
Conceiving in its deer-mind that it is water,
When in truth there is no water.
Even so, the seeds of consciousness,
Fluctuating, see realms of objects;
The vikalpa of foolish people arises,
Just as one clouded by cataracts.
In beginningless saṃsāra,
Clinging to an entity to be apprehended,
Just as a reverse wedge drives out a wedge,
One renounces craving and grasping.
Like illusions, incantations, mechanisms,
Floating clouds, dreams, and flashes of lightning,
Contemplating these, one attains liberation,
Forever severing the three continuities.
In them there is nothing produced,
Just like a mirage or empty space;
Knowing all dharmas in this way,
One is then without anything known.
Verbal teachings are merely provisional designations;
They too have no characteristics;
Giving rise to vikalpa regarding them,
The functioning of the skandhas is like floating hairs.
Like paintings, floating hairs, illusions,
Dreams, a gandharvanagara,
A firebrand-wheel, or a mirage in the heat of noon,
Sentient beings appear where nothing exists.
Permanence and impermanence, identity and difference,
Both and neither are also like this:
A continuity of beginningless faults,
The foolish delusion and vikalpa of ordinary people.
In a bright mirror, clear water, or a pure eye,
Or a fine and wondrous maṇi gem,
All kinds of forms appear within them,
Yet in truth there is nothing at all.
All entities manifest,
Like a painting or a mirage in the heat of noon;
Various kinds of forms appear,
Yet like a dream there is nothing at all."
