"Mahāmati! I recall that once when I was dwelling in a certain place, a worldly-treatise brāhmaṇa came to where I was. Without asking whether it was an opportune time, he straightaway asked me: 'Gautama, is everything created?' At that time I replied to him: 'Brāhmaṇa, that everything is created is the first worldly treatise.' He again asked: 'Is everything uncreated?' I again replied: 'That everything is uncreated is the second worldly treatise.' He again asked: 'Is everything permanent? Is everything impermanent? Does everything arise? Does everything not arise?' At that time I replied: 'These are six worldly treatises.' Mahāmati! He again asked me: 'Is everything identical? Is everything different? Is everything both? Is everything neither? Does everything appear by taking birth due to various causes?' At that time I replied: 'These are eleven worldly treatises.' Mahāmati! He again asked: 'Is everything undeclared? Is everything declared? Is there a self? Is there no self? Is there this world? Is there no this world? Is there another world? Is there no other world? Is there liberation? Is there no liberation? Is everything momentary? Is everything non-momentary? Is there space? Is there analytical cessation? Is there nirvāṇa? Gautama, is it created or uncreated? Is there an intermediate existence? Is there no intermediate existence?' Mahāmati! At that time I replied: 'Brāhmaṇa, such statements as these are all worldly treatises; they are not what I teach—they are your worldly treatises.'"
