爾時，大慧菩薩白佛言：「世尊！如世尊所說，菩薩摩訶薩當善語、義。云何為菩薩善語、義？云何為語？云何為義？」佛告大慧：「諦聽！諦聽！善思念之，當為汝說。」大慧白佛言：「善哉世尊！唯然受教。」佛告大慧：「云何為語？謂言字妄想和合，依咽喉、唇舌、齒齗、頰輔，因彼我言說妄想習氣計著生，是名為語。」

At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One! As the World-Honoured One has spoken, bodhisattva mahāsattvas should be skilled in words and meanings. What is a bodhisattva's being skilled in words and meanings? What are words? What is meaning?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Listen carefully! Listen carefully, and consider this well! I will explain it for you." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "Excellent, World-Honoured One! I receive your instruction with reverence." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "What are words? That is, speech, syllables, and vikalpa come together, relying on the throat, lips, tongue, teeth, gums, cheeks, and jaw; arising from the grasping at vāsanā of discursive speech of oneself and others—this is called words."
