「復次大慧！如來非如虛空常。如虛空常者，自覺聖智眾具無義過。大慧！譬如虛空非常非無常，離常無常、一異、俱不俱，常無常過故不可說，是故如來非常。復次大慧！若如來無生常者，如兔馬等角，以無生常故方便無義；以無生常過故，如來非常。復次大慧！更有餘事知如來常。所以者何？諦無間所得智常，故如來常。」

"Furthermore, Mahāmati, the Tathāgata is not permanent like empty space. If he were permanent like empty space, it would incur the fault that the provisions of pratyātmāryajñāna would be meaningless. Mahāmati, empty space is neither permanent nor impermanent; being free from permanence and impermanence, identity and difference, and both and neither, it cannot be described, because it would incur the fault of permanence and impermanence; therefore, the Tathāgata is not permanent. Furthermore, Mahāmati, if the Tathāgata were permanent as unborn, he would be like the horns of hares, horses, and the like; since he would be permanent as unborn, skillful means would be meaningless. Because of the fault of being permanent as unborn, the Tathāgata is not permanent. Furthermore, Mahāmati, there are other matters through which one knows the Tathāgata is permanent. Why is this? The wisdom attained without interruption in the truth is permanent; therefore, the Tathāgata is permanent."
