"Mahāmati, wholesome and unwholesome refer to the eight consciousnesses. What are the eight? They are: the tathāgatagarbha named the storehouse consciousness (ālayavijñāna); citta, manas, manovijñāna, and the body of the five consciousnesses—not what is spoken of by the externalists. Mahāmati, regarding the body of the five consciousnesses: together with citta, manas, and manovijñāna, with wholesome and unwholesome marks, they mutually change and decompose, continuously flowing like a stream. Arising as an indestructible body, they both arise and cease. Unaware of the appearance of their own mind, they sequentially cease and other consciousnesses arise, with distinct forms and marks. Grasping consciousness and the five consciousnesses arise together in association, not remaining for a single kṣaṇa; this is called momentary."
