"Not a vehicle" means not the Buddha vehicle. "Undecaying" refers to the true Buddha. Because it is not a vehicle, he confers the prophecy of the One Vehicle upon them; because it is the true Buddha, he states that it is free from all faults and evils. This verse summarizes the first and last two replies, and also incorporates the fifth question and reply. "For the sake of unmediated wisdom…" re-summarizes the first reply; its meaning can be understood. "The wisdom arising in all Buddhas…" versifies the reply to the second question: it means that from the wisdom obtained beneath the tree of awakening when he first arose, he afterwards spoke of the path with discrimination; this expresses non-speaking by means of his speaking, not that he did not speak. Speaking from the perspective of non-nature, the three vehicles are not the Buddha vehicle, and the empty, tranquil nirvāṇa is not the ultimate nirvāṇa—this is why he said he did not speak. "Desire, form, becoming, and views…" versifies the four entrenchment-grounds: that is, the views and thoughts of the three realms are divided into four entrenchments. From "mental consciousness" onward, it versifies the reply to the sixth question: it means that the manas arises from the eighth consciousness, and the eighth consciousness is where the manas abides, hence it is called its "dwelling." Stated thus, it naturally does not allow one to give rise to the view of annihilation based on the cessation of the seven consciousness-bodies. As for their speaking of impermanence regarding the cessation of the manas and eye consciousness, etc., or adopting a view of nirvāṇa, these are all due to the false conceptual views of ordinary people and tīrthikas; not knowing the primordial limit, the Tathāgata for this reason preached the constantly abiding.
