'Extinguishing their doctrine of arising' means refuting the falsely conceptualized doctrines of those tīrthikas. Although the tīrthikas use words of non-arising and non-cessation, they are conceptual distinctions of vikalpa and the cause of saṃsāra; hence they are called the 'doctrine of arising.' The Buddha's teaching of non-arising and non-cessation is the true principle of the Middle Way, set in contrast to their arising; hence it is called the 'meaning of non-arising.' From 'All dharmas...' onward, he versifies neither existence nor nonexistence: just as a gandharvanagara, an illusion, and a dream, though they appear, lack a cause. 'Non-arising lacks svabhāva...' and so forth investigates this further from the above, meaning: non-arising is the lack of svabhāva, and the lack of svabhāva is emptiness; why then is it taught by me? From 'Because it is free from combination...' onward is the explanation, meaning: when free from the characteristics of combination in sense-faculties and sense-objects, the nature of awareness naturally does not appear. Non-appearance is emptiness, and emptiness is non-arising; therefore the Buddha teaches the lack of svabhāva. 'While each and every...' again explains the above meaning, as is evident from the text.
