This further explains the line "respond to beginners." Although one makes extensive and varied discriminations through verbal teachings for the foolish, in truth they are not real, just as the various forms manifested by an illusionist are all unreal; therefore the various spoken explanations are merely expedients established in accordance with capacities. As for "If what is spoken is not appropriate": this means that if one speaks the teaching of reality to persons of the Hīnayāna, it is not suitable; they, on the contrary, consider it not to be an explanation. This is what is meant by: "If preaching the Dharma does not suit the capacity, it turns into a great false speech."
