Śrāvakas have a sharp disgust for suffering and are urgent to attain realisation; therefore, upon hearing the four truths taught—knowing suffering, cutting off its accumulation, admiring cessation, and cultivating the path—their bodies and minds are delighted. Although the svalakṣaṇas and sāmānyalakṣaṇas of the skandhas, dhātus, and āyatanas differ in expansion and contraction, they are simply the truth of suffering. 'Knowledge of lakṣaṇas' is the knowledge of the general lakṣaṇa of the four truths. Śrāvakas have dull faculties and delight in cultivating this knowledge; 'not cultivating the lakṣaṇa of awakening through dependent origination': 'conditions' refers to the twelve links of dependent origination, which are cultivated by pratyekabuddhas to awaken, yet śrāvakas take no pleasure in cultivating them. The śrāvaka, through uninterrupted samādhi, sees the eighth stage of the pratyekabuddha, cutting off active afflictions of view and thought, but not yet cutting off the distinct delusion of ignorance. Stating 'habitual afflictions' refers precisely to ignorance. For this reason they have not yet been able to transcend the saṃsāra of inconceivable transformation, but can only transcend the bitter ocean of the saṃsāra of fragmented karmic lifespans. The lion's roar is fearless speech, meaning that upon reaching the eighth stage they say, 'My births are exhausted'—cutting off suffering and accumulation; 'the holy life is established, and I will not experience further existence'—cultivating the path and realising cessation. These are all real and not false, hence it is said that they 'know in accordance with reality'. Cultivating the selflessness of persons up to attaining the awakening of nirvāṇa means emptying the attachment to a person and attaining nirvāṇa, realising true emptiness.
