"Furthermore, Mahāmati, regarding grasping at rules and observances: how is it that a srotaāpanna does not grasp at rules and observances? It is because they see well the characteristics of suffering in the places of rebirth; therefore they do not grasp [at them]. Mahāmati, 'those who grasp' refers to foolish common persons who are determined to accept and practice painful austerities, seeking rebirth for the sake of the pleasures of requisites. They, however, do not grasp [at them], except in dedicating themselves to the excellence of self-realization, practicing the skillful means of the unconditioned characteristics of dharmas free from discrimination, and upholding the branches of morality. This is called the srotaāpanna's severing of the characteristic of grasping at rules and observances."
