Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One, do you not establish the eight consciousnesses?"
The Buddha said: "I establish [them]."
Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "If they are established, why is it that apart from the mental consciousness there are not seven consciousnesses?"
The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Because of that cause and that objective support, the seven consciousnesses do not arise. As for the mental consciousness, it arises from grasping at the segmented divisions of sense objects; nourished by vāsanā, it is conjoined with the storehouse consciousness and the [manas] mind; arising from the causes and conditions of reflecting on and grasping at 'I' and 'mine', without destroying the marks of the body, because of the storehouse consciousness grasping at the realms appearing from one's own mind as its objective support, the assembly of minds arises, mutually causing one another. Just as with the waves of the ocean, blown by the wind of realms appearing from one's own mind, their arising and ceasing are also like this. Therefore, when the mental consciousness ceases, the seven consciousnesses also cease."
