The four kinds of nirvāṇa mentioned by the tīrthikas do not depart from svabhāva and lakṣaṇa. Having repudiated them, the Buddha then says that he does not take svabhāva and lakṣaṇa as nirvāṇa, but simply takes the cessation of the consciousness that is the hindrance of vikalpa and jñāna as nirvāṇa. As for "By that cause and that objective support, etc.", it means that the seventh consciousness, through the causes of the inclinations of mind and so forth, forms the body of the six consciousnesses; investigating its root cause, it still takes the mind of the eighth consciousness as the support of the various consciousnesses. From "Just as when the [great flow of] water" downward, the meaning of the simile is apparent.
