This verse summarizes the aforementioned teaching of the three vehicles. The three kinds of liberation are the fruits realized by the three vehicles: Śrāvakas sever the primary active defilements; Pratyekabuddhas sever the propensities; Bodhisattvas sever both the primary defilements and propensities. Although their breaking of delusion differs, the fruit they realize is the single nirvāṇa of true emptiness. "The selflessness of dharmas," and so forth: this means that Mahāyāna practitioners attain the selflessness of dharmas, wherein delusion and wisdom are equal and bondage and liberation are not two; this is the great liberation that is far removed [from both]. From "Like wood floating" onward, it illustrates that the two vehicles have not yet severed the cognitive obscurations, and are drifted about by the wind of the mark of emptiness; like floating wood in the sea turning with the waves, although they have severed common delusions, they have not severed fundamental ignorance; hence it says "residual propensities are afflictive foolishness." Residual propensities refers to ignorance.
