The Buddha told Mahāmati: "All dharmas have two kinds of conditional characteristics: external and internal. As for external conditions, through various expedient conditions such as a lump of clay, a pillar, a wheel, a cord, water, wood, and human craft, a jar arises. Just like a clay jar, arising through expedient conditions such as thread and cloth, straw and a mat, a seed and a sprout, milk and ghee, is also like this. This is called external conditions giving rise [to things] through successive transformation."
