The Buddha told Mahāmati: "The head, chest, throat, nose, lips, tongue, gums, and teeth come together in combination to produce sound." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One! Are speech and discrimination different or not different?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Speech and discrimination are neither different nor not different. Why is this? Because that [speech] is the mark produced by its cause. Mahāmati! If speech and discrimination were different, discrimination could not be the cause; if they were not different, words could not reveal meaning, yet there is revelation. Therefore they are neither different nor not different."
