"Just as a potter, with a single lump of clay, uses human labor, water, wood, the wheel, and rope as skillful means to make various vessels, the Tathāgata is also like this: in the selflessness of dharmas which is free from all marks of vikalpa, through various kinds of wisdom and skillful means, he speaks either of the tathāgatagarbha or of selflessness. For this reason, he speaks of the tathāgatagarbha, which is not the same as the self spoken of by the tīrthikas; this is called teaching the tathāgatagarbha. In order to guide and attract the tīrthikas who cling to a self, he speaks of the tathāgatagarbha to cause them to abandon the false vikalpa of the view of a self, enter into the realm of the three liberations, and hope to swiftly attain anuttarā samyaksambodhi. Therefore the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Samyaksambuddhas speak of the tathāgatagarbha in this way; if it were not like this, it would be the same as the tīrthikas. Therefore, Mahāmati, to be free from the views of the tīrthikas, you should rely on the selfless tathāgatagarbha."
