At that time, Mahāmati Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One! The World-Honoured One once said: 'Be careful never to associate with or practice the diverse worldly treatises and debates; if one associates with them, one takes hold of greed and desire, and does not take hold of the Dharma.' World-Honoured One, for what reason did you make such a statement?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "The diverse phrased meanings, causes and conditions, metaphors, and collected embellishments of worldly discourses entice, deceive, and confuse foolish ordinary persons, so that they do not enter the true mastery of themselves, do not awaken to all dharmas, engage in false discrimination and inverted views, and fall into the two extremes. Foolish and confused, they destroy themselves; their rebirth in the various destinies continues unbroken, and they fail to attain liberation; unable to awaken to cittadṛśyamātra, they do not separate from external natures and self-natures, falsely discriminating and clinging. Therefore, the diverse debates of worldly discourses do not free one from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, grief, suffering, and vexation, but only deceive, confuse, and bewilder."
