"The three realms of existence" are the three realms. "External referents" are external realms. This means that birth and death in the three realms and six destinies have no real essence; it is merely due to vikalpa that one perceives these diverse external realms, which is why it is said, "Which ordinary fools cannot understand." This sums up the fault of delusion and falsehood. Yet the diverse dharmas taught by the Tathāgata all address the vikalpa of sentient beings drowning in birth and death, intending to lead sentient beings to turn away from falsehood and return to truth, abiding peacefully in nirvāṇa. Sentient beings, however, become attached to names and verbal discourse, unable to forget the words once they have grasped the meaning. If one can understand verbal discourse as having no verbal discourse, then the dharmas taught are also ungraspable—just as one catches the fish or hare and forgets the trap or snare. This is the profound intention the Tathāgata displays to people.
