Then Bodhisattva Mahāmati addressed the Buddha again, saying: "World-Honoured One! Please explain for us the Buddha's awareness. World-Honoured One! What is the Buddha's awareness?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Being aware of the selflessness of persons and dharmas, thoroughly knowing the two obstacles, transcending the two kinds of death, and severing the two afflictions—this is called the Buddha's awareness. Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas who attain this dharma are also called Buddhas. For this reason, I speak of the One Vehicle." Then the World-Honoured One, wishing to proclaim this meaning once more, spoke a verse:
