Mahāmati addressed the Buddha again, saying: "As the World-Honoured One has said: 'From the night I attained supreme perfect awakening up to the night I entered parinirvāṇa, in the interval between I did not speak even a single syllable, nor have I spoken, nor will I speak; not speaking is the Buddha's speech.' World-Honoured One, for what reason does the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha say that not speaking is the Buddha's speech?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Because of two dharmas I speak in this way. What are the two dharmas? They are the dharma of self-attainment and the dharma of fundamental abiding. These are called the two dharmas. Because of these two dharmas, I speak in this way."
