To skillfully transform and guide, one must penetrate both the doctrine and the teaching; only then can one induce beings and lead them to the Way. For the doctrine is the root of the Way, while the teaching is the trace of instruction. The doctrine clarifies the purpose; if the purpose is not clear, one loses where to return. The teaching explains the principle; if the principle is obscured, one is lost as to where to enter. Therefore, if one penetrates the doctrine but does not penetrate the teaching, although the principle is refined it is not revealed; if one penetrates the teaching but does not penetrate the doctrine, although words are eloquent they lack the essential. Thus the two truly require each other to function and cannot be one-sidedly neglected. Mahāmati requested the explanation of the characteristic of penetration of the doctrine without mentioning the teaching merely because he brought up the essential; if the doctrine is penetrated, the teaching is contained within it. That the Buddha mentions both in his reply is because both must be present to be complete.
