Mahāmati said to the Buddha: “World-Honoured One, if through attachment to various objects and various unreal conceptual thoughts, vikalpa arises; and if by attachment to grāhya and grāhaka, not knowing cittadṛśyamātra, and falling into views of existence and nonexistence, one increases tīrthika views; and if through the vāsanā of vikalpa attaching to various external objects, the mind and mental factors mistakenly imagine self and what belongs to self and arise: World-Honoured One, if such external characteristics of various objects fall into the characteristics of existence and nonexistence, they are free from nature and non-nature, and free from the characteristics of views. World-Honoured One, the paramārtha is also like this, free from the characteristics of pramāṇa, indriya, avayava, dṛṣṭānta, and hetu. World-Honoured One, why is it that in the case of unreal objects in one place, attachment to various natures gives rise to vikalpa, whereas attachment to the characteristics of the realm of paramārtha does not give rise to vikalpa? Is the World-Honoured One not propounding a doctrine of heterodox causes, asserting that one arises while the other does not?”
