At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāmati again addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World-Honoured One! I only wish that you would speak of the gradual succession of the attainment of cessation for all bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas. If one is skilled in the characteristics of the gradual succession of the attainment of cessation, I and the other bodhisattvas will never mistakenly abandon the joyful gateway of the attainment of cessation, nor fall into the delusion of all śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and tīrthikas.'
