At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahāmati addressed the Buddha again, saying: 'World-Honoured One! The World-Honoured One prophesies that arhats attain anuttarā samyaksambodhi, without any distinction from the bodhisattvas. The nature of all sentient beings does not attain nirvāṇa; who reaches the Buddha Path? From first attaining Buddhahood until parinirvāṇa, in the interim you have not spoken a single word, nor have you given any answer. Because the Tathāgata is constantly in samādhi, there is also neither reflection nor investigation. Emanation Buddhas emanate and perform Buddha-works; why speak of consciousnesses having the characteristics of successive destruction from moment to moment? Why does the Vajra-wielder constantly follow and guard [you]? Why do you not establish the ultimate beginning? Demon and demonic deeds appear, along with the retribution of evil karma—the maiden Ciñcā, the woman Sundarī, and emerging with an empty bowl. The hindrances of evil karma appear; how is it that the Tathāgata has attained all-knowledge and yet is not free from various faults?'
