"And in this *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*,
I have entirely prohibited and cut off meat.
Reproved by all Buddhas,
Bodhisattvas, and śrāvakas,
Having eaten it, they have no shame,
Constantly foolish and dark life after life.
Previously I spoke of seeing, hearing, and suspecting;
Now I have cut off all meat.
With false discrimination, they do not realize it,
And thus are born in meat-eating realms.
Just as the faults of greed and desire
Obstruct noble liberation,
Wine, meat, scallions, leeks, and garlic
Are all obstacles to the noble path.
Sentient beings of future ages
Will foolishly speak of meat,
Saying: 'This is pure and blameless;
The Buddha permitted us to eat it.'
Eat with the thought of taking medicine,
And with the thought of eating one's child's flesh;
Knowing contentment, giving rise to revulsion,
The practitioner practices begging for food.
For those who abide in a mind of compassion,
I say they constantly practice revulsion;
With tigers, wolves, and fierce beasts,
They can always roam and dwell together.
If one eats flesh and blood,
Sentient beings are all terrified;
Therefore, practitioners,
With compassionate minds, do not eat meat.
Eating meat lacks compassion and wisdom;
It eternally turns away from true liberation
And violates the noble outward signs;
Therefore, one should not eat it.
Being born into a brāhmaṇa clan,
In places of spiritual practice,
And into families of wisdom, wealth, and honor—
All this comes from not eating meat."
