二、言聲詮表者，若小乘中依《發智論》，十二部經以佛音聲語音語路用以為性，名句文等顯佛教作用。若大乘中，以名句依聲假立無別體性，是故唯以音聲為性。《維摩經》云「以音聲為佛事」。

Second, regarding vocal sound expressing and manifesting: if in the Hīnayāna, relying on the *Jñānaprasthāna*, the twelve divisions of scriptures take the Buddha's vocal sound, spoken words, and paths of speech as their nature, while names, sentences, phonemes, and so forth manifest the functions of the Buddha's teaching. If in the Mahāyāna, names and sentences are nominally established on the basis of sound and have no separate essential nature, therefore vocal sound alone is taken as their nature. The *Vimalakīrti Sūtra* states: "Taking vocal sound as Buddha-work."
