Within the first, obstructions have five meanings: 1. Veiling the truth and that which is to be known, being deep, thick, and difficult to sever. 2. Being deceptive and thus empty, inherently having nothing at all. 3. 'Both' means that only by possessing the preceding two meanings is the definition of an obstruction fulfilled; for if it did not veil the truth, it would be wisdom rather than an obstruction, and if it were not inherently empty, it would be truth rather than an obstruction; therefore, possessing these two meanings, the definition of an obstruction is established. 4. 'Elimination' means that there is nothing of its nature that is not empty, and there is no principle that it does not obstruct; being identical in nature and mutually depriving, it is neither empty nor an obstruction. 5. 'Consummation' means possessing the preceding four meanings united as a single obstruction; thus it constantly obstructs principle yet principle is not concealed, and its nature is always empty yet principle does not appear. With respect to the obstruction, emptiness and existence are non-dual; with respect to principle, concealment and manifestation are non-dual; the obstruction is truth yet non-truth, and principle is delusion yet non-delusion. Furthermore, only the delusion that is identical with truth can veil the truth, and only the truth that is identical with delusion can be veiled by delusion. Contemplating this, it can be seen.
