Māra translates here as "one capable of harming." Anything that obstructs wholesome factors and can destroy the life of wisdom is called a mara. In general, there are four kinds: the defilement mara (kleśa-māra), the death mara (mṛtyu-māra), the aggregates mara (skandha-māra), and the deva mara (devaputra-māra). This question about the maras and non-Buddhists intends for practitioners to recognise the roots of the various views within saṃsāra.
