"At one time" is the fulfillment of time. Time is also an interval conventionally designated in accord with the world. "One" excludes other times: when the Tathāgata preached sūtras, the times were immeasurable and cannot be fully enumerated. A single word compendiously covers them, hence it is said "at one time," which is the time of the Dharmarāja's inaugurating the auspicious assembly. "The Buddha" is the fulfillment of the host. In Sanskrit, Buddha; here rendered "Awakened One," referring to one whose awakening of self and others is complete. The Awakening of Faith says: "What is called awakening means that the mind-essence is free from thought. The characteristic of being free from thought is equal to the realm of empty space, with nowhere it does not pervade. The single characteristic of the dharma-realm is the Tathāgata's impartial dharmakāya." Thus, by non-thought it is called awakening, yet it has three meanings: first, self-awakening, awakening to the fact that one's own mind is originally devoid of arising and ceasing; second, awakening others, awakening [to the fact that] all phenomena are nothing other than thusness; third, complete awakening, when the principles of self and other are perfect, it is called complete; hence one knows that where there is thought, it is not called awakening. The Awakening of Faith says: "All sentient beings are not called awakened, because from beginningless time thoughts have continued in succession, never having been free from thought." It also says: "If there are sentient beings who can awaken to non-thought, they are headed toward the Buddha's wisdom."
